Stay safe
What to do, step by step
- 01
First: get safe
If you can, leave at the next junction or pull into an emergency area or services. If you're stopped on the hard shoulder, get out on the left, move up the bank behind the barrier and call from there. If you're stuck in a live lane and can't get out safely, keep your seatbelt on, hazard lights on, and call 999.
- 02
Smart motorway stretches
Parts of the M1 around Nottingham have no permanent hard shoulder. Look for orange emergency areas marked with blue SOS signs. National Highways traffic officers patrol these stretches, and they may arrange removal themselves if it isn't safe to wait.

Where we can help
Once you're off the live motorway at a junction, slip road, services or nearby road, we can get to you, jump or replace a battery, or recover the vehicle. Call and tell us exactly where you are. We'll tell you honestly and straight away whether we can safely reach you there.
If you or anyone else is in danger, or you’re stuck in a live lane, call 999 now. Recovery can wait.
