If anyone is hurt, or a vehicle is blocking a busy road, call 999 first. Everything else can wait.
- 01Make it safeHazard lights on. If the car can be moved, get it to the side of the road. Get everyone out on the side away from traffic, and stand well back, behind a barrier if there is one.
- 02Stop and swap detailsThe law says you must stop. Give your name, address and registration to anyone with reasonable grounds to ask, and get theirs. If you can't exchange details at the scene, you must report the accident to the police as soon as possible, and within 24 hours.
- 03Record everythingTake photos of the vehicles, the damage, the road and the other car's number plate. Note the time and any witnesses' contact details. Don't admit fault: leave that to the insurers.
- 04Call your insurerTell them as soon as you can, even if you're not planning to claim. Ask whether your policy includes recovery. If it does, they may arrange it, and you shouldn't pay twice.
- 05Get the car movedIf it isn't safe or legal to drive (damaged lights, a wheel or steering problem, leaking fluids, warning lights), don't drive it. We'll recover it to your home, your garage or the bodyshop your insurer names.
Accident recovery from Roadvault
We recover accident-damaged cars across Nottingham at our normal published rates (£85 call-out plus £2.50 a mile by day, and £135 plus £2.50 a mile at night and on bank holidays, with the first 5 miles included), plus £30–£60 for a damaged vehicle, because it takes longer to load and secure safely. We confirm the total before we set off.
Who pays for recovery after an accident?
If the accident wasn't your fault, the cost of recovery is usually part of what you claim from the other driver's insurer, so keep the receipt. If your own policy includes recovery, use that first. Either way, ask your insurer before you pay for anything.
