Breaking down is stressful, but a few simple steps keep you safe and get the right help to you faster.

  1. 01Get safe firstPull as far left as you can, ideally into a layby, side road or car park, and put your hazard lights on. On a busy or fast road, get everyone out on the side away from traffic and wait behind a barrier if there is one. If you're stuck in a live lane and can't get out safely, keep your seatbelt on and call 999.
  2. 02Work out exactly where you areRoad name, direction of travel, and the nearest junction, landmark or postcode. Or send us your location as a map pin in one tap, so there's no guessing.
  3. 03Say what happenedMake and model, whether it's an automatic, hybrid or electric, what it did before it stopped, and where it needs to go. It helps us bring the right kit, like skates for a car stuck in park.
  4. 04Agree the priceGet the total before anyone sets off. We confirm ours by text or WhatsApp, and that's what you pay.
  5. 05While you waitStay with the car if it's safe to, keep your phone charged and your keys with you, and keep an eye out for us.

On motorways and fast roads

If you break down on the M1, leave at the next junction or get into an emergency area if you possibly can. Our M1 guide covers what to do step by step, including smart motorway stretches with no hard shoulder.

Is it the battery?

If the car simply won't start, it's often a flat battery, and a jump start is cheaper than a recovery. Our guide to why a car won't start helps you tell the difference from the sound it makes.

What it should cost

With us, £85 call-out plus £2.50 a mile by day, and £135 plus £2.50 a mile at night and on bank holidays, with the first 5 miles included. See what car recovery costs in Nottingham for worked examples from every area.

Questions

Quick answers

What should I do first if my car breaks down?

Get yourself and your passengers safe: off the road if you can, hazard lights on, and out of the car on the side away from traffic if it's a busy or fast road. Then call for help.

Who should I call if my car breaks down in Nottingham?

If anyone's in danger, 999. If you have breakdown cover, your provider. If not, a local recovery firm. Ask for the total price before they set off.

What will a recovery firm need to know?

Exactly where you are, the make and model, whether it's an automatic, hybrid or electric car, what happened, and where it needs to go.

Should I stay in the car while I wait?

On a quiet street, usually that's fine. On a busy or fast road, no: get out on the side away from traffic and wait somewhere safe, behind a barrier if there is one.
